Electron microscope price: what the quotation leaves out

The instrument price in an electron microscopy quotation is frequently the smaller half of the first five years. Vibration isolation, power conditioning, cooling, the service contract, the sample preparation equipment and a trained operator are all necessary and are quoted separately or not at all. This page is about the whole cost and about when not to own one.

The figures in this panel are regulation and standard identifiers, named from the documents themselves and linked below. They are not prices: BioBricks publishes verified prices for synthesis services only, and does not imply an instrument price index it has not measured.

Costing the decision

  1. Survey the site before shortlisting. Floor vibration, stray magnetic fields, acoustic noise and temperature stability all limit achievable resolution, and remediation is a building project. A site survey before selection prevents buying performance the room cannot deliver.
  2. Cost the sample preparation separately. Coating, polishing, sectioning, critical point drying or cryo preparation as the samples require, each with its own equipment and consumables. Preparation frequently costs more in time than imaging does, and it determines image quality more than the microscope.
  3. Decide whether elemental analysis is in scope. Adding spectroscopy changes the detector requirement, the chamber geometry, the software and the training, and it imposes its own standards and calibration. It is a genuine capability rather than an accessory.
  4. Budget the service contract as a running cost. Contracts on these instruments are a substantial annual figure, and running without one is a gamble against a single expensive failure. Get contract pricing during selection, not after.
  5. Name the operator. These instruments reward skill heavily and punish neglect. An instrument without a named, trained custodian degrades and produces poor images that get blamed on the samples.
  6. Compare honestly against a shared facility. For occasional imaging, a university or commercial facility gives a maintained instrument, an expert operator and no capital cost. Ownership makes sense when usage is high, when samples cannot travel, or when turnaround is critical.

The room is part of the instrument

Resolution specifications are achieved in a room built for the purpose. In an ordinary laboratory with a corridor nearby and a lift in the building, the achievable resolution can be far below the specification, and no amount of instrument adjustment recovers it.

Vendors will conduct a site survey and will tell you what is required. Treat that document as part of the purchase price rather than as advice.

Images are evidence and need a record

Magnification, accelerating voltage, working distance, detector and any post processing all determine what an image shows. An image published or relied upon without those parameters cannot be reproduced or defended.

Keep the acquisition metadata with the image file and the sample identifier. Modern instruments record it automatically; the discipline required is only to keep it attached.

Reading a fluorescence microscope price

The stand, the light source, the filters and the camera are four separate purchases sold as one number, and they do not depreciate together. A quotation worth comparing breaks out the objectives (which is where the optical quality actually sits), the illumination and its lifetime, the filter sets per fluorophore, and the camera with its software licence.

What inflates a quotation is usually the filter sets and the software modules rather than the microscope. Ask which fluorophores the quoted filters cover, what a further set costs, and whether the acquisition software is licensed per seat, because those three answers move the total more than the choice of stand.

An sem price, and what the figure includes

A scanning electron microscope is quoted as a system and the column is only part of it. A benchtop instrument with a tungsten source is the entry point; a field emission source, a larger chamber, a motorised stage and an energy dispersive spectrometer for elemental analysis each move the price by a large step. Then the things that are not the microscope: the vacuum system's service contract, a sputter coater and sample preparation equipment, a room with acceptable vibration and field, and the software licence. Ask for the installed cost and the annual running cost separately.

An atomic force microscope price, and what it buys

An AFM is priced by mode and by environment. A basic contact and tapping mode instrument on a vibration table is the entry point; adding closed-loop scanners for accurate metrology, liquid cell work for biology, electrical and magnetic modes, or a high-speed head each steps it up, as does an acoustic enclosure for a noisy building. Consumables are cantilevers, which break, so the annual cost is real. Against an electron microscope it buys true height data in air or liquid with no vacuum and no coating, at a much smaller field of view.

A sem microscope price, and the configuration behind it

The cheapest scanning electron microscopes are benchtop instruments with a tungsten source, a small chamber and a single detector, and they answer a surprising amount of routine imaging. Price rises with the source, tungsten to lanthanum hexaboride to field emission; with the chamber and stage; with detectors, secondary and backscattered electrons, then an energy dispersive spectrometer for elemental work; and with environmental or low vacuum capability for uncoated samples. Installation matters too, since vibration, magnetic fields and cooling can cost as much as an option.

A secondary ion mass spectrometer and what it costs to run

A secondary ion mass spectrometer sputters a surface and mass analyses what comes off, which gives elemental and isotopic depth profiles no electron instrument can, and it carries the same costs as one: a vacuum system, a stable room and a trained operator. Standards for the matrix in question are what make its numbers quantitative rather than comparative.

A mass spectrometry bench and what has to be around it

A mass spectrometry bench is more than the instrument: gas or nitrogen supply, an exhaust route for the vacuum pump, stable temperature and enough clear length for the inlet and its plumbing. A bench specified at the size of the instrument alone is the commonest reason an installation is delayed.

A mass spectrometry test, bought as a service

A mass spectrometry test bought as a service is defined by the question rather than the instrument: identity, quantity, or a structure, and each needs a different ionisation and a different standard. A quantitative answer needs an isotope labelled internal standard, which is what separates a number from a peak.

Common questions

What does the quotation usually exclude?
Site preparation, vibration and field mitigation, uninterruptible power, cooling, sample preparation equipment, the service contract and training. Together these often approach or exceed the instrument line in the first years.
Is a benchtop instrument enough, or do I need the scanning electron microscope price of a full system?
For routine morphology and quality inspection at moderate magnification, frequently yes, and the siting requirements are far lighter. High resolution work, cryo applications and demanding elemental analysis still need a full instrument in a proper room.
How much does sample preparation matter?
More than the instrument specification in most cases. Charging, contamination and artefacts from poor preparation limit far more images than the microscope's resolution does.
Should occasional users buy or book?
Book. A shared facility provides a maintained instrument and an operator who uses it daily, which yields better images than an owned instrument used monthly by someone who has to relearn it each time.
