A pipette tip looks like the most interchangeable item in the laboratory and is one of the least. What to specify

  1. Fit is part of the measurement. The tip seals against the instrument's cone, and the quality of that seal affects the delivered volume and the imprecision. Any change of tip should be verified gravimetrically on the instruments concerned before it is adopted across the laboratory.
  2. Filter tips and when they are required. A hydrophobic filter stops aerosol and liquid reaching the instrument, protecting the pipette from contamination and the sample from whatever is in the pipette. For amplification work, for anything infectious and for volatile liquids they are standard practice rather than an upgrade.
  3. Low retention surfaces. A treated surface reduces the film left behind, which matters for viscous liquids, for detergent-containing buffers and for precious samples at small volumes. It costs more and makes no measurable difference to routine aqueous transfers.
  4. Read the certifications separately. Sterile, nuclease free, endotoxin tested and free from specific inhibitors are separate claims tested separately. Buy the ones your assay needs and do not assume any of them follows from another; sterile does not mean nuclease free.
  5. Racked, refill or bulk. Racked tips are convenient and generate the most plastic; refill systems reduce waste and cost with a handling step; bulk bags are cheapest and are only appropriate where tips are loaded by hand into reusable racks. This is a waste and cost decision rather than a quality one.

Switching supplier without changing your data

Verify volumes gravimetrically on the affected instruments across the working range before and after a switch, and keep the record. Laboratories that switch on price alone occasionally find a systematic shift in results that nobody connects to the tip box for months.

For a validated method, the tip is part of the method. A change has to be assessed and documented rather than made by procurement.

Waste, and what can be done about it

Tips are a large part of a laboratory's plastic waste. Refill systems, bulk loading into reusable racks and supplier take-back schemes each reduce it, and none of them affects data quality where the tip specification is unchanged.

Contaminated tips follow the waste route for their hazard rather than the recycling route, so the achievable reduction is mostly in packaging and racking rather than in the tips themselves.
