Picking the right tool
- The spring holder is for heating in the hand. A sprung wooden or metal holder grips a tube near the rim so it can be held in a flame at arm's length. It is for short, attended heating of a small tube and nothing else, and the tube is always pointed away from everybody present.
- The clamp is for fixing to a stand. A clamp with adjustable jaws and a boss head fixes a tube to a retort stand for a long reaction, a distillation or an unattended cooling step. Jaw coating protects the glass, and the clamp should hold without being tightened until the tube complains.
- Tongs are for lifting and moving. Tongs lift a tube out of a bath or a block and carry it a short distance. They are not for holding a tube steady during heating, because the grip depends on continuous hand pressure that is hard to maintain safely.
- Size the jaws to the tube. Every holder and clamp grips a diameter range and fails at both ends. Measure the tubes in routine use rather than trusting a nominal size, since suppliers vary, and buy two sizes where the laboratory spans a wide range.
- Check the stand fit. Clamps attach through a boss head to a rod of a particular diameter, and mismatched rods and bosses are a standing irritation in shared laboratories. Standardise the rod diameter across the laboratory and buy bosses to match.
Heating a tube without losing it
Heat along the length of the liquid rather than at the base, keep the tube moving, never fill it more than a fraction full, and point the open end away from people. Superheating and bumping throw contents out of a tube with real force, and they are the reason the direction matters.
For anything beyond a brief flame heating, a block or a bath in a clamp on a stand is safer and more controllable than holding the tube at all.
What to buy alongside
A rack that holds the tubes in use, a stand with the same rod diameter as everything else, heat-resistant gloves and a heatproof mat. Individually trivial, and together they are the difference between a bench where hot glass is handled safely and one where it is improvised.
Keep the holders where hot work happens rather than in a drawer. Tools that are not to hand are tools that get substituted with a paper towel.
