A beaker is a container with a spout, and the differences between a good one and a poor one show up in use rather than in the catalogue: whether it pours without running down the outside, whether the rim survives handling, and whether the glass takes a hotplate without cracking. What to specify
- Borosilicate for heat, plastic for safety. Borosilicate glass takes direct heating on a plate and repeated autoclaving. Polypropylene and polymethylpentene do not shatter and suit cold rooms, field work and anything carried; each has solvent limits and a temperature ceiling that borosilicate does not.
- Low form or tall form. The low or squat form is the general-purpose beaker: stable, easy to stir, quick to evaporate from. The tall form reduces evaporation and suits titration and precipitation work. Buying only one form is why labs improvise with the wrong vessel.
- Spout and rim. A well-formed spout pours cleanly and a reinforced rim resists chipping, and these are the two features that most distinguish laboratory glass from cheap glass. A chipped rim is a cut and a contamination route and should retire the beaker.
- Graduations are for guidance. The moulded scale on a beaker is approximate by design and is there so you know roughly where you are. Any volume that appears in a result is measured in a cylinder or a volumetric flask. Treating beaker marks as measurements is the most common volumetric error in a teaching or production lab alike.
Heating, cooling and thermal shock
Borosilicate tolerates heating on a plate with a diffuser and cooling in air, but it does not tolerate a sudden change, and taking a hot beaker to a cold surface or adding cold liquid to hot glass is how beakers crack. A scratched or chipped beaker fails far sooner under the same treatment.
Plastic beakers must never go on a hotplate. The temperature rating in the catalogue refers to the contents rather than to direct contact with a heating surface.
Stocking a bench
Most labs need a spread of small sizes and far fewer large ones, and the large ones are usually the first to be borrowed and the last to come back. Buying a graded set in the low form, plus a smaller number of tall form and a handful of plastic for cold and field work, covers almost everything.
Mark ownership if beakers travel between groups. Glassware attrition in a shared building is real and is mostly a labelling problem rather than a breakage problem.

- Can you measure volume in a beaker?
- Only approximately. The moulded graduations are indicative and carry no tolerance grade. Use a graduated cylinder or a volumetric flask for any volume that forms part of a result.
- What is a science beaker made of?
- Usually borosilicate glass, which tolerates heating and solvents, or a polyolefin plastic such as polypropylene where breakage matters more than heat resistance.
- What is the difference between low form and tall form beakers?
