Microscope listings are written to be compared on the wrong things. Two instruments with the same body name can differ by several times in price because of objectives, head, illumination and stand, and none of those is usually in the headline. The buyer's job is to convert a listing into a full configuration, because until that is done the prices are not comparable and neither are the instruments.

Turning a listing into a comparable quote
- Get the configuration as line items. Body, head, eyepieces, each objective by its own specification, condenser, stage, illumination and any camera adapter. Objectives are the largest variable and the easiest to leave vague, and a stand quoted with a basic set beside one quoted with a research set is not the same purchase at all.
- Establish what has been serviced, and by whom. On a refurbished instrument, ask what was cleaned, what was replaced and who did it. Optics cleaning, new illumination and a serviced focus mechanism are the three that matter. An instrument sold as working and an instrument sold as serviced are different products at similar prices.
- Check parts and service availability. The question that decides the instrument's useful life is whether the manufacturer still supports it and whether a local engineer will. An unsupported instrument can still be excellent for a decade and is worth less, and knowing which situation you are in is part of the purchase rather than an afterthought.
- Price the whole obligation. Delivery, installation, alignment, a service visit, consumable illumination and any software licence belong in the comparison. On refurbished instruments these are frequently excluded and are the reason a low headline price ends up level with a new one.
- Decide whether you are buying or renting the capability. A short project, an unproven requirement or a peak in workload is often better served by renting, which converts a capital argument into an operating one and returns the instrument when the work ends. Rental also lets a laboratory try a class of instrument before committing, which is the cheapest way to avoid a class error.
What actually ages on a microscope
Good optics do not wear out. What deteriorates is illumination, the smoothness of the focus and stage mechanisms, the condition of the eyecups and the coatings if the instrument has lived somewhere humid. Fungus in the optics is the one fault that is expensive and sometimes terminal, and it is worth asking about directly.
On anything with electronics, the electronics decide the lifetime. Cameras, displays, motorised stages and control software age on a technology cycle rather than an optical one, and a well-kept purely optical instrument will outlast a digital one bought the same year.
Reading a ranked list of instruments
Ranked lists on retail sites are generally ordered by sales, by review volume or by commercial arrangement, and they are dominated by instruments sold to non-laboratory buyers. An instrument that appears at the top of a general ranking is not thereby suitable for a laboratory bench, and often the ranking is measuring a different market entirely.
A more useful ranking is the one your own work produces: list the jobs, list the specifications each job requires, and score candidates against those. It takes an hour and it is the only ordering that reflects what you will actually do with the instrument.
What to write into the order
The full configuration by part number, the condition and what was serviced, the warranty and what it covers, who installs and aligns it, what illumination is included and what a replacement costs, and the return position if the instrument does not perform on your own specimens.
Ask for an acceptance test on your material before final payment where the value justifies it. A vendor confident in a refurbished instrument will agree, and the request itself tells you something useful about the seller.
