Getting the specification right
- The size mix, not the size. Buy the mix that matches your vessels and your media volumes rather than standardising on one size. A culture lab feeding flasks and plates typically burns through the small and mid sizes and barely touches the largest, and an order that ignores that ends with shelves of unusable stock.
- Plugged or unplugged. A cotton or hydrophobic plug at the top stops liquid and aerosol reaching the pipette controller and stops contamination travelling the other way. For any sterile culture work the plug is not optional; unplugged pipettes belong in non-sterile chemistry.
- Individual or bulk wrap. Individually wrapped pipettes protect sterility until the moment of use and generate more waste and more handling. Bulk-wrapped bags are cheaper per unit and are only appropriate where the whole bag will be used inside a cabinet in a short period.
- Graduation direction and negative graduation. Many serological pipettes carry a graduation beyond the nominal volume so the full nominal can be delivered. Confirm the direction of the scale and whether it reads to the tip, because mixing two scale conventions in one lab is a quiet source of transfer error.
Sterility claims, and what they cover
A sterility claim describes the state of the product inside intact packaging, and it says nothing about what happens once the wrapper is open in a cabinet with poor technique. Ask for the sterilisation method and whether the manufacturer publishes a certificate for the lot, particularly if the work feeds a regulated process.
Some suppliers also certify the absence of specific contaminants relevant to culture work. Where that matters to your assay it is worth asking for on the order rather than assuming it from the sterility claim.
Buying by the case
Consumables of this kind are where a laboratory's spend quietly accumulates, and where consolidation genuinely saves money because the products are close to interchangeable across suppliers at a given specification. Standardise the specification first, then take quotes on that specification.
Watch storage: a case bought on price and stored badly is a case of pipettes with compromised packaging. Keep them dry, off the floor and away from anything that punctures.
