A laboratory that buys only analytical balances ends up weighing kilogram quantities on an instrument designed for milligrams, and a laboratory that buys only top loaders eventually needs four decimal places it does not have. The two classes answer different questions. This page covers where each belongs, what the specification numbers mean in practice, and what a moisture balance is for.

Specifying the balance

  1. Start from the smallest quantity you will weigh, not the largest. Readability has to be a small fraction of the smallest mass you care about. Weighing fifty milligrams on an instrument reading to ten milligrams gives a result with two significant figures, whatever the capacity above it.
  2. Then check the capacity you actually need. Capacity and readability trade against each other on every instrument. A top loading balance covers roughly the range from a gram to several kilograms; below about a hundred milligrams of required precision the answer is an analytical instrument in a draught shield.
  3. Decide whether a draught shield is required. Air movement dominates below about one milligram of readability, which is why analytical balances are enclosed. A top loader reading to ten or a hundred milligrams generally does not need one, and one sited beside a fume hood sash or an air conditioning outlet may still.
  4. Fix the calibration arrangement before purchase. Internal calibration weights make a daily check trivial and are worth the premium on any instrument in regular use. External calibration needs a weight set of the right class, stored properly and itself recalibrated, which is a recurring cost people forget to quote.
  5. Site it before you buy it. A solid bench away from doors, vibration and direct sun is worth more than a better specification on a bad bench. Balances returned as faulty are very often balances sited next to a centrifuge.

Reading the specification honestly

Readability is the smallest increment the display shows and says nothing about whether that increment is meaningful. Repeatability, quoted as a standard deviation, is the number that tells you whether the last digit is real, and it is the one manufacturers are least likely to put in the headline.

Linearity matters when you weigh across the range, minimum weight matters when you weigh small quantities against a heavy tare, and stabilisation time matters when somebody has to do this two hundred times a day. All three are worth asking for in writing.

Moisture balances and what they can and cannot tell you

A moisture balance heats to a set temperature and reports mass loss, usually to a stability endpoint. It is fast, it is repeatable within one method, and it is not a water content measurement: anything volatile leaves with the water, and anything that decomposes adds to the loss.

Where water specifically is the question, a Karl Fischer titration is the reference method and a moisture balance is a production check calibrated against it. Treating the two as interchangeable is how a specification gets written against the wrong number.

Keeping the record

A balance that feeds a result into a report needs its check weight readings kept, not just performed. A printout or a direct connection into the laboratory system is the difference between an audit that takes an hour and one that takes a week.

Where results support regulated work, the electronic record requirements apply to the balance output like any other instrument, which is an argument for buying connectivity at the outset rather than retrofitting a serial adaptor later.

What is the difference between a top loading balance and an analytical balance?
Readability and enclosure. Analytical instruments read to 0.1 milligram or finer and are enclosed against draughts; a top loading balance reads coarser, carries more, and is open for easy access.
What does a moisture balance measure?
Mass loss on heating. It weighs a sample, heats it under a controlled programme, and reports the percentage lost. It measures volatiles, not water specifically, which matters for anything that decomposes.
How often should a balance be calibrated?
Verified against a check weight at the frequency your quality system sets, usually each day of use, and calibrated by an accredited provider annually. The daily check is what catches a problem; the annual certificate is what documents it.
Does balance lab equipment need to be on a dedicated bench?
For analytical work, effectively yes: a stone or heavy bench away from traffic and airflow. For a top loader, a stable bench away from vibration sources is usually enough.
